Hey, I've been wasting time working on a new Star Frontiers Font that matches the font used to make the original logo. Here's a sample image made using the font.
The font only has the uppercase letters plus a lower case A (so it slides under the T in STAR) and a lower case R that doesn't extend below the line.
You can download the current version of the font from my site. Check it out and tell me what to tweak. |

Thank you, Terl!
I've been wanting a font exactly like this for years. I even tried making one myself, but let's just say that my typeface-making abilities are somewhat... lacking.
Yeah, lacking. That's a goo way to put it... |

| I need to finish it and post updates. I've added all the numbers and most of the punctuation. I just need to do some real lowercase letters and figure out where to put the special A & R. |

| Is this font ready yet? I am working up graphics for my site. Also, how do you use the font on a website when others don't have the font? |

Easy, you use it to make graphics, then you post images!
Now an IMPORTANT reason to finish the font...Iz needs it for my pc game! Gotta have numbers and all that. You just have 256 characters to perfect! Let's get busy!
It would look REALLY COOL on the game's new charactersheet. I put it on the buttons today, then tried to use the font natively with the code, and discovered that most characters show up as box-spaces! ARGGGH! The uppercase stuff looks really neato...but spaces show up as boxes and no numbers! What character range (0-255) can I enable in this font as is and get clean results? Maybe a version with filler numbers? |

I'll crack this back open and get to work on it again. I have all the uppercase letters, most of the punctuation and the numbers done. The problem I ran into is that I used the lower case A and R slots for the special versions of those characters (A that slides under T and P so it doesn't look like to much space and R with the long tail that drops to the next line.) I have to figure out where to put those in the character map if I want to make actual lower case letters.
On the subject of lowercase letters. Any suggestion on look and feel for them. That was the other thing that stalled me was that I wasn't real sure how best do them. |

Okay, I've updated the font. All the standard ASCII characters (0-127) are defined. All the capital letters, digits and punctuation have been done. The lower case letters are just place holders for the moment but at least they won't come up as boxes . Right now they are just a generic sans serif font. I need to stylize them still. I might need to work the numbers a little as well but I have to think about that. In any case, you should be able to use the font in other programs now.
Note: There are two special characters in this font. The first is a capital A that is shifted to the right so that when printed next to a capital F, P, T, V, or Y the spacing is appropriate and there isn't a big gap. This used to be the lower case 'a' but I've moved it to ASCII character code 161 instead of the upside down exclamation point.
The second is the capital R with the long tail. This used to be the default capital R but I made the none tail version the default. The tailed version is in ASCII character code 172 instead of the 'logical not' symbol (a line with a little tail on the right side).
I figured we wouldn't need those two symbols in the font. Anyway, you can download it at the link in the original post in this thread. Enjoy. |

Joy Joy Joy!
I have been tweaking buttons, text, backgrounds and all that recently, as well as creating encounters and quests in New Horizons. This will seriously help out in a number of places!
Thanks Tom! |

| No problem. I've got to design the lower case letters but I'll try to work on them and get updates out. |

Well, I have only used the font from my laptop, which doesn't have a 105++ keyboard (I am not sure if even a 105 has a NOT symbol) and my desktop is a Dvorak keyboard (my preference) optimized for text, so it won't have it either. Pre-defined text that uses the special A after a T or the like probably isn't a problem, I can just copy the character from the charactermap and paste it in when I need it. If I want to use the special a with typed text, I can just have a watchdog function mapped to <SHIFT>+<A> that calls the last character typed to see if it is an incompatable character or not, then choose the correct letter A. Should work just skippy. Do you have any information on the history of the font? Was it created by TSR just for the Star Frontiers logo? I suppose it was probably just the logo. The title Alpha Dawn has a unique lower case a in it that might be a lowercase guide, but I see the font no-where else. I think it was just a graphic. |

I think it was just a graphic as well. And the Knight Hawks and Alpha Dawn subtitles are definitely a different font, probably a real one. The special A and R definitely point to being used just to make the graphic. It may very well have been completely an art project.
In any case. All that I have left is the lower case z which I'm working on right now. After I get the kids in bed I'll finish it up and post it. |

Okay. The first pass at this font is done. You can download it from the link in the original post. Here is a text sample created in OpenOffice with the font:

Feel free to send me comments on any characters you think should change. I have a few ideas myself that I might play with in the future. |

Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz.
Isn't the bottom of the P loop on the original logo indented somehow? Guess not...
Well, if you wanted a real pain, you could make the V asymetrical, and maybe vertical mirror looking K. Other ideas might be a Z that has a compressed or extended top or bottom, or even a mid-hash. |
